NBA Odds Carmelo Anthony as Good as Gone from Denver

Go ahead and start fitting Denver Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony for a New York Knicks jersey because it sure appears the former Syracuse freshman sensation is going to be headed to the Knicks sooner rather than later.
Anthony can be a free agent next summer but has a three-year, $65 million extension from the Nuggets on the table. But Carmelo Anthony has made it clear he has no intention of signing that anytime soon and wants to do what’s best for his family. The Nuggets can’t simply let him walk away as a free agent and get nothing in return like Cleveland did for LeBron James (technically the Cavs got a few draft picks in a sign-and-trade with Miami, but nothing of value like they could have).
ESPN.com quoted a source as saying Anthony is "going to make it real clear that he's not coming back" to Denver. And the Denver Post on Tuesday reported that the Nuggets are now considering a strategy to part ways with their 26-year-old star forward. The team clearly will trade him rather than just let him walk away – and obviously Anthony would have more value right now than, say, at the trading deadline midway through the season. The Knicks can’t really offer too much in terms of good players but can give Denver draft picks and salary cap relief in the form or Eddy Curry’s 2011 expiring contract.
Anthony, who grew up in Baltimore, reportedly does want to return to the East Coast and would like to play for Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni, who was an assistant on the U.S. national team that won gold in Beijing on which Anthony was one of the top players. Adding Anthony to newly signed Amare Stoudemire wouldn’t replace the Knicks missing out on James but it would come close. Carmelo averaged 28.2 points and 6.6 rebounds last season.
Look for Denver to give ‘Melo a deadline to accept the extension and if he doesn’t to open up the bidding around the NBA – and nearly every team in the league no doubt will make an offer.
